Traditions

Sebastian Salm

Do you know how to fish, son?
I know you can swim;
Diving beneath the surface, looking for fish
You will never see under the water.
Your family whispers
that you’re not really a southern boy.
That you’re more concerned about your personal life than
Going out into the lake and casting your poll
Even though you know you won’t catch anything.
They say
A little too much about politics
A few too many veiled insults
How many fish have been caught?
In the history of this world how many?
I don’t know why I care if you fish or not
Because you catching as many as you can
Would be like a new pebble on the shore.
They call you an outcast
Because they don’t understand their hypocrisy
They call me a god send
Because they want to continue their traditions.
